Swimming & Diving Receives Academic Excellence Honors

Jan. 27, 2016

Norfolk, Va. --- The San Jose State University women's swimming and diving team was once again honored by the College Swim Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) with the Fall 2015 Scholar All-American award for the Spartans academic performance.

"One of the central pillars of our program, philosophic, is that excellence doesn't happen in a vacuum. What we preach to the team is on a regular basis is their role is to be the be the best person they can be, be the best student they can be and be the best athlete they can be," said the swimming and diving head coach Sage Hopkins.

San Jose State earned a team 3.31 grade-point average during the Fall 2015 semester, surpassing the CSCAA standard of 3.00 required for the award. The Fall semester marks the seventh time in a row the Spartans have won this award.

"We really want them to hone in on getting up each morning, spending a couple hours at the pool working on their athleticism and they flip a switch and their job is to be the best student they can be when they enter the classroom and they are studying," Hopkins said about the team. "Our team grade-point average and our national honors academically are a testament to how hard our team works to be the best people they can be."

The Spartans were one of 149 NCAA Division I women's programs to receive the national academic award.
