La Jolla, Calif. --- A pair of first place finishes by distances swimmer Riley Spitser and a season best dive from Cari Reiswig helped lead the San Jose State Spartans swimming and diving team to two of three victories in a four-way dual meet at Canyonview Aquatic Center.
"We are really happy with the team's performance today," said Spartans Head Coach Sage Hopkins. "We have been working them real hard. The past two days we've had two of the best practices all season."
Scored as three individual duals, the Spartans defeated UC San Diego, 176-121, and University of the Incarnate Word, 222-76, while falling to Mountain West Conference opponent San Diego State, 167-129.
Competing in the 1000-yard freestyle, Spitser, a senior, finished with a time of 10:20.53 and an impressive 14.73 second lead over San Diego State's Francesca Arredondo for the win. Finishing third in the 1000 freestyle for the Spartans was junior Allyson Fellows with a mark of 10:46.70.
Spitser then took the blocks in the 100-yard freestyle with senior Brynne Beneke to apply pressure to SDSU in the points, according to Hopkins. Spitser finished fourth in the 100 freestyle with a time of 52.68, 1.46 seconds off the San Diego State's top time by Whitney Weisz. Beneke finishes right behind Spitser in fifth place with a mark of 52.71.
"We're very proud of Spitser's performance, especially in her maturity and leadership. She was defiantly still feeling the 100 freestyle when she stepped up onto the blocks for the 500 freestyle and she went out and commanded the 500 from start to finish," Hopkins said.
Extending her lead lap after lap, Spitser handily took first place in the 500 freestyle with a touch of 4:58.08 to earn her second win of the day.
Improving on her season personal best in the 3-meter springboard for the second time this week, Reiswig, a sophomore, scored a 302.85 for a first place finish. Reiswig finished second in the 1-meter springboard with a score of 270.05.
"It's great to see the diver performing so well," Hopkins said.
Sophomore diver Kylie Fonseca scored 237.20 in the 1-meter to place fifth while freshman Megan Au finished seventh in the 1-meter, scoring 221.30, and sixth in the 3-meter posting a score of 224.00.
Sophomore Colleen Humel grabbed two second place finishes, in the 100-yard backstroke and the 400-yard individual medley, and a third place, in the 200-yard backstroke, for the Spartans. In her second place finishes, Humel touched in 57.92 in the 100 backstroke and in 4:37.44 in the 400 individual medley. Humel posted a time of 2:04.86 in the 200 backstroke.
"Humel raced very hard today, she has been without question working the hardest in the pool this season and it's great to see her performing so well," Hopkins said.
The Spartans picked up second and third place finishes in the 100-yard butterfly, sophomore Brenna Bushey was the runner-up with a time of 56.88 and freshman Marley Maluafiti took third with a mark of 57.59. Maluafiti also finished third in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:05.70.
Junior Taylor Solorio placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:06.54 and fourth in the 200-breaststroke with a time of 2:27.27.
The Spartans relay team of Spitser, Beneke, Solorio and Maluafiti placed first in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:36.35, beating UC San Diego's relay team by 0.03 seconds., 1:36.38. San Jose State also placed third with the relay team of senior Alli Davis and sophomores Taylor Lehr, Brittany Heng and Angel Van Hofwegen with a time of 1:39.08. In the 400-yard medley relay, the Spartans team of Humel, Solorio, Bushey and Beneke placed second with a finish of 3.52.24.
