Feb. 13, 2016

Final Stats

Albuquerque, N.M. --- San José State's late first-half scoring drought allowed New Mexico to get out to a lead which would never be relinquished, and the Spartans fell 74-58 to the Lobos inside WisePies Arena (The Pit) in Mountain West play. After a very competitive first 15 minutes, the Spartans (8-17, 3-10 MW) finished the first period making just 2 of their final 13 shots. It added up to a 5:25 scoring drought which allowed UNM to take an 11-point lead.Cody Schwartz's three-ball with 24 second remaining put an end to the drought and sent the SJSU to the locker room trailing 35-27.San José State cut it to a two-possession game twice early on in the second half. Princeton Onwas threw down a vicious dunk, Brandon Clarke sunk a pair of free throws and Frank Rogers' jump-hook in the lane made it 42-36 UNM lead at the 13:39 mark.Cody Schwartz missed a three that would have made it a three-point game, and Elijah Brown went right down and hit a jumper for the Lobos. After Isaac Thornton missed a contested layup, Tim Williams hit a bucket in the paint that put it right back to a 10-point game, 46-36.A few minutes later, Jalen James popped two threes, and cut the UNM lead to 47-42. But this time, the Lobos answered with eight straight points in what seemed like the blink of an eye. Brown and Tim Jacobs both hit threes during UNM's answer which brought a sellout crowd of 13,411 to its feet inside The Pit.The Lobos led by as many as 19 at the 4:46 mark in the second half.Rogers led the Spartans with 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds. There were no other Spartans in double-figures scoring.
