Colorado Springs, Colo. --- Four-time San Jose State record holder senior Riley Spitser is one of four Spartans named to the Mountain West All-Conference swimming and diving team for their performances at the conference championship meet.
"I am very proud of these four student-athletes. All four have done a tremendous job in the pool and weight room this year," said. San Jose State swimming and diving head coach Sage Hopkins. "I am especially proud of what they have also accomplished academically while putting so much time and focus in athletically."
Combining to earn seven all-conference awards, Spitser, a freestyle specialist, is joined by sophomores Colleen Humel and Cari Reiswig and redshirt freshman Brenna Bushey. Mountain West All-Conference honors was awarded to swimmers and divers who placed in the top eight in an individual event at the championship meet.
"The fact that we have a freshman and two sophomores in this group also speaks well for our future as well," Hopkins said.
Setting new San Jose State records in the 200-yard, 500-yard, 1000-yard and 1650-yard freestyle events at the Mountain West Championships, Spitser, a native of San Diego, was named all-conference in three races for the second year in a row. Spitser received Mountain West honors for finishing second in the 1650 freestyle, third in the 500 freestyle and eighth in the 200 freestyle, clocking NCAA championships B Standard provisional times in all three events. In the past three seasons she has collected seven conference honors.
"Riley breaking school records each of the four days of the meet was a huge part of our achieving our highest ever placing," Hopkins said.
Reiswig, a native of Galt, Calif., was the only Spartan diver named to the all-conference team. She was recognized for finishing fifth in both the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events. Reiswig has received four all-conference awards in two seasons.
Named to the 2015 all-conference team in the 200-yard backstroke, Humel, a native of Chicopee, Mass., was named to the 2016 team for her eighth place finish in the 100-yard backstroke.
In her first season competing for the Spartans, Bushey, a native of Littleton, Colo., posted a NCAA `B' cut time of 54.03 in the 100-yard butterfly finals for a fifth place finish to earn her first all-conference award.
