In a return match from the start of the season, the San Jose State University women's water polo team gets a second chance with the University of Hawaii to in the first contest for both teams at the UC Irvine Invitational. The Spartans and Rainbow Wahine meet Saturday, February 27, at 9:15 a.m. at Corona del Mar High School in Newport Beach, Calif.
San Jose State (7-6), ranked 11th nationally in the latest coaches' poll, was edged by #6-Hawaii (10-2), 7-5 on January 24, at the UC Santa Barbara Winter Invite. The Spartans' Rae Lekness led all players with three goals. San Jose State held a 3-2 second-quarter lead before the Rainbow Wahine scored three consecutive goals to take a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the way.
With 39 goals for the season, Lekness leads San Jose State and the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation in scoring.
The Spartans head into the UC Irvine Invitational following a 9-5 victory over Santa Clara on February 19. The win was the fourth time this season San Jose State limited its opponent to five goals or less. Freshmen Alicia Magliocco and Sara Northam and sophomore Tayler Peters divided the goalkeeper duties in the Santa Clara win. Magliocco took over the starting goalkeeping role on February 6 in the Stanford Invitational.
Following the Hawaii match, the Spartans will play either #2-ranked UCLA (8-1) or #18-ranked San Diego State in a February 27 afternoon contest. San Jose State will play two more matches on February 28 against nationally-ranked opponents in the UC Irvine Invitational.
