ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - San José State University sophomore Cambree Harbaugh finished second in the long jump to capture eight points for the Spartans, who are in seventh place after two days at the Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Harbaugh leaped a school record 5.90m (19 feet, 4 ¼ inches) in her sixth and final attempt, just missing first place by half an inch to Wyoming's Ja'la Henderson.
"I was thinking about last year when I finished fifth and all I wanted to do was get first this time. When I made the last jump, I was thinking it was a 5.95m but when they announced 5.90, I was like 'dang it'," said Harbaugh. "But this gives me confidence going into tomorrow's triple jump."
The second-year Spartan from Meridian, Idaho, can now stake claim to having the highest finish ever for a Spartan at the Mountain West Indoor Championships as well as the first to score points. She finished fifth in the long jump at last year's conference indoor championships to earn the first points ever for the program, which is in its third year in the Mountain West.
The long jump event is where the Spartans had the highest point potential with three of the five entries in the top-eight of the pre-championship seedings. However, only Harbaugh qualified for the finals.
"We didn't do as well in the long jump as hoped so that's a bummer but Cam(bree) did well and I'm really excited about that," said Spartans track and field head coach Jeff Petersmeyer. "We'll be back tomorrow with the 4x400 and the jumps. This conference is tough if you don't have your 'A' game. It's the brutal reality as we experienced today."
THE QUINTET IN THE LONG JUMP
The Spartans were represented by five jumpers in the long jump, in order of their pre-championship seedings, #4 Cambree Harbaugh, #5 Kelsey Johnson-Upshaw, #8 Jade Childs, #20 Kolbi Sims and #25 Leah Lambert.
With 29 jumpers in all in the preliminaries, the nine competitors with the best marks advanced to the finals. Harbaugh was the #2-qualifier with a jump of 5.75m but the rest of the Spartans fell short to join the top-nine. The closest Spartan to the ninth spot jump of 5.56m came from Lambert's 5.53m (18 feet, 1 ¾ inches) who finished 11th. Johnson-Upshaw was next at 5.51m (18 feet, 1 inch), good for 12th, followed by a 13th place jump by Childs at 5.46m (17 feet, 11 inches). Sims finished in 24th with a jump of 5.00m (16 feet, 5 inches).
IN THE SPRINTS …
The Spartans were represented in four sprint events, including the 60-meter hurdles, 60-meter dash, 200-meter dash and the 400-meter dash, however, no one qualified for the finals.
Three Spartans ran the 60-meter hurdles including Makayla Webb, Jade Childs and Leah Lambert, who were seeded #10, 11 and 20, respectively, in the pre-championship seedings based on their indoor season-best times.
The seedings nearly held true to form as Childs was the top Spartan finisher at 11th, finishing in 8.71 seconds, the same time she ran in yesterday's pentathlon. It was a seasonal-best time for the Meridian, Idaho native, only three-one hundredths off her personal-best.
Webb, a sophomore, was the next Spartan finisher, barely finishing behind Childs in 8.73 seconds, placing 12th.
Sophomore Lambert finished 18th with a seasonal-best 9.24 seconds.
The top-eight times from the preliminaries qualified for tomorrow's finals.
In the 60-meter dash, Maija Pinkins and Madiha Raza nearly equaled their personal-best times, sprinting in 7.98 and 8.21 seconds, respectively. It was only four-one hundredths and two-one hundredths of a second off their personal-bests.
Four Spartans ran the 200-meter dash with Caitlin Wilson holding the highest seed at #7 with the top-eight advancing to the finals. However, she finished 11th with a time of 24.69 seconds. Webb was next at 13th in 24.80, Pinkins was 21st in 25.83 and Jelia Brice-Montgomery was 24th in 26.19.
Wilson also ran the 400-meters as the lone Spartan representative, finishing 15th in 56.96 seconds.
ANOTHER CLOSE CALL, THIS TIME IN THE DISTANCE EVENTS…
Cambree Harbaugh's second place finish was not the only close finish the Spartans experienced on Friday as graduate student Jennifer Beckingham missed qualifying for the finals by two-one hundredths of a second in the 800-meter run, finishing in 2:11.87.
Senior Lalida Maokhamphiou was the lone Spartan running the mile run. Maokhamphiou ran a season-best 5:23.73 but failed to qualify for the finals.
LOOKING AHEAD TO DAY THREE:
In day three of the championships on Saturday, Petersmeyer's squad will look to score in the triple jump, with #2 seed Nicole Iloanya and #7 Harbaugh. Also, the Spartans are a #8 seed in the 4x400 meter relay and will have three athletes in the high jump.
