Cathedral City, Calif. - The San José State softball team got a 11-0, five innings victory over LIU Brooklyn in the morning and jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the evening against Stanford, but couldn't make it stand up and lost 9-3 earning a split in its second day of action at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
San José State 11, LIU Brooklyn 0 (5 Innings)
The Spartans (5-8) scored eight runs in the third inning and starter Chantelle Ladner limited the LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds to four hits in an 11-0 run-rule victory in the team's first game of the day.
SJSU put two runs on the board in the second by way of a Taylor Purdy sacrifice fly and an RBI single to centerfield from Alexandra Luna. Luna, who went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs driven in, also did it with her defense. The freshman catcher picked off a runner at first base in the first inning and did it again to a runner at second in the second.
Having chased the Blackbirds (4-8) starter Erynn Sobieski (2-5) in the second, the Spartans clobbered reliever Tallie Woodson in the third. San Jose State sent 12 batters to the plate, banged out eight hits and scored eight runs.
With the bases loaded and nobody out, freshman Madison Aurin emptied them with a double to left center to make the score 5-0. Alyssa Martinez then singled in Aurin who had taken third on a throw to the plate on her double.
Three batters later, with Martinez on second and Purdy on first, Casey Lester got into the action with a two-RBI single which made it 9-0. Brittany Abacherli reached on an error by the LIU Brooklyn shortstop, scoring Lester. Jessica Madrid drove in the final run of the frame on her second single of inning and the Spartans were in the driver's seat up 10-0.
San José State tacked on one more run in the fourth on a Luna RBI double to right center.
Ladner (3-3) earned her second victory in as many games and has thrown 9.2 innings of six hit, shutout ball.

Stanford 9, San José State 3
Each team had seven hits, but the Cardinal made better use of theirs getting four extra base knocks and shutting down the SJSU threats later innings.
San José State (5-9) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Brittany Abacherli walked and Kristen Heffley doubled to put two runners in scoring position. Abacherli scored on a wild pitch and Casey Watt, who was inserted to run for Heffley, moved up to third. Three batters later Madison Aurin hit a sacrifice fly to drive in the second run of the inning and stake the Spartans to a 2-0 lead.
Stanford cut the advantage in half in the bottom of the frame, scoring a run without the need of a hit. They got a leadoff walk. The runner advanced to second on a wild pitch from Spartan starter Ashley Penney, moved to third on a fly out and scored on a sacrifice fly.
The score remained 2-1 until Stanford put four runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth.
Penney (2-1) gave up and leadoff walk and then a two-run homer to right field, which gave the Cardinal its first lead of the night, 3-2. A hit batsman and another walk spelled the end of the road for Penney. She would take the loss pitching three innings, giving up two hits, three walks and five earned runs.
Collette Riggs came in, uncorked a wild pitch and walked a batter to load the bases with no outs. After she struck out the next two batters, it looked like San José State might escape the innings by giving up just the two runs. But a single plated two more for Stanford and they led 5-2 after four.
In the sixth, SJSU got a run back on an Alyssa Martinez RBI-single up the middle. The Spartans loaded the bases with two outs, but Emma Entzminger was caught looking at strike three which ended the threat.
Stanford (6-5) scored four runs on two walks and three hits in the bottom of the sixth to make it 9-3.
San José State loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh, but Martinez hit a long fly out to end the threat and the game.
