Logan, Utah --- A poor finish to the end of the first half on the road at Utah State continued into the second period and the San José State men's basketball team was flattened 88-70 by Utah State on Saturday night.
"We couldn't get in a rhythm and that was partly them," said Spartans' head coach Dave Wojcik. "I just thought we got paralyzed when they made the run. That's when you have to buckle down and become even more disciplined, and we just didn't have that tonight."
The Spartans (8-20, 3-13 MW) ended the first half on a 4:08 scoring drought. They followed that by making just one shot in the first 8:02 of the second period.Put it all together, and it added up to a 21-5 run for Utah State (14-13, 6-10 MW). A free throw by Shane Rector at the 8:36 mark in the second half gave the Aggies a 31-point lead, their largest of the game. While the Spartans struggled to get shots to drop in the second period, Utah State seemingly scored at will, especially from downtown where it finished 58.8 percent (10-17). The Aggies shot 55.1 percent (27-49) for the game, while SJSU shot 39.7 percent (23-58).San José State took a 31-29 lead with 6:28 left in the first period when senior big-man Ivo Basor stepped out for a three that barely moved the net. But it wouldn't last for long as Darius Perkins answered with a three of his own on the next possession, which gave USU the lead for good.
"We hung in tough early and then lost our focus and discipline," Wojcik said. "We didn't tag rolls, gave up easy layups, miscommunication led to open threes and they really hurt us in transition."
Utah State's Chris Smith led all scorers with 20 points. Quinn Taylor with 16, Perkins with 12, and Jalen Moore with 11 were also in double-figures scoring.Cody Schwartz led the Spartans with 11 points. Frank Rogers and Princeton Onwas joined Schwartz in double-figure scoring with 10 points each.San José State plays its final road contest of the year on Wednesday, March 2, at Wyoming.
