Tucson, Ariz. - The San José State men's golf team struggled on Sunday and sits in a 13th place tie at the National Invitational Tournament after the first round. The Spartans shot a four-over 292 on the par-72, 7,200-yard Catalina course at Omni Tucson National with senior Taylor Bromley the lone Spartan under-par.
"Today we weren't at our best but we'll learn from it, move on and get better the next couple of days. I'm confident of it," said Spartans head coach John Kennaday.
Bromley's round included four birdies and two bogeys going even-par in the front nine and two-under in the back nine on a familiar course, having played it in last year's N.I.T. as well as the Mountain West Championships.
"He played pretty solid as it's a definite improvement over what he's done on the golf course than in the past because he's worked hard at it," said Kennaday.
Scott Munger was the next low man for the Spartans, shooting an even-par 72. The redshirt sophomore from Danville, Calif. has shot even-par or better in the first round in each of the four tournaments he has played in this season. His round included an eagle on the par-5, 511-yard 10th hole.
Kevin Velo, starting in his fifth consecutive tournament during his freshman campaign, shot a two-over 74. After bogeying three of the first four holes, Velo finished the front nine going birdie-birdie to make the turn at one-over. In the back nine, he made one bogey along with eight pars.
Redshirt freshman Bradley Keyer, who is starting his first tournament as a Spartan, finished four-over 76 where damage to his round came on the par-3, fourth hole that he quadruple bogeyed. Otherwise, the Henderson, Nev. native, played even-par the rest of the holes with two birdies and two bogeys.
Sophomore Brett Thawley and freshman Matthew Murray both shot a seven-over 79.
Santa Clara's Hayden Shieh is atop the leaderboard at 10-under 62, helping lead Santa Clara to the top of the team leaderboard at 10-under 278 along with Nevada.
The Spartans will tee off their second round off the 10th hole starting with Velo at 8:53 a.m. MST, Keyer at 9:03 a.m., Munger at 9:14 a.m., Thawley at 9:24 a.m., Bromley at 9:35 a.m. and Murray at 9:45 a.m.
