Spartans Close Mary Nutter With Two National Powerhouses

Cathedral City, Calif. - After winning two of its first three games of the weekend the San José State softball team was swept by a pair of top-10 teams on its final day of competition Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.

No. 9 Washington 17, San José State 1 (5)

The Spartans (5-10) scored their lone run of the game in the third inning on an RBI double off the bat of Brittany Abacherli. SJSU starter Emily Rogers (0-1) went three innings, scattered three hits and struck out two Huskies (10-3), but issued three walks in and left trailing 2-1.

Collette Riggs came on in relief at the top of the fourth. She lasted only two-thirds of an inning. Riggs surrendered three hits and walk and four runs and was lifted with SJSU trailing 6-1. Ashley Penney was brought in the try to slow #9 Washington's offense, but she faired no better.

Penney was in there for two-thirds of an inning. She allowed five hits, walked eight batters and was tagged for 10 runs. By the time she exited the game the Spartans were down 16-1 and lost to Washington 17-1 in five innings.

No. 8 Georgia 7, San José State 3

SJSU (5-11) scored its three runs against #8 Georgia in the fourth inning. Madison Aurin led off with the first home run of her college career, a solo bomb to left. Three batters later, with a runner on first, Emma Entzminger singled through the left side.

Brittany Abacherli drove both base runners in with a single to left center. The RBIs were Abacherli's team-leading 15th and 16th of the season.

After using four pitchers in the previous game, starter Chantelle Ladner (3-4) had to go the distance against Georgia (13-1). She gave up 11 hits and all seven Bulldogs' runs in the first three innings.
