March 1, 2016

Final Stats

San Jose, Calif. - Nyre Harris, one of five seniors on the Spartans roster, had 10 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists to lead the San Jose State women's basketball to a 65-51 win over the Wyoming Cowgirls on Senior Night in The Event Center.

Harris, along with Emily Schill, Ellie Stevens, Emily Vann and Riana Byrd were honored in ceremonies before the game. The four who played in the game, Schill has been sidelined all season, combined to score 29 of the Spartans 65 points, grabbed 23-of-40 rebounds, dished out nine of its 19 assists, had four of seven steals and all five blocks in the contest.

With the game tied 29-29 at the half, the Spartans (13-15, 11-6 MW) opened the third quarter with an 8-0 run. Harris started it by nailing a three near the right elbow. On the team's next possession Stevens matched her with a three from nearly the same spot.

Stevens, who finished with eight points and four boards, grabbed a defensive rebound the next time down the floor, fed Dezz Ramos who then threw a superb pass to Jasmine Smith. Smith, streaking down the floor, beat the Cowgirls defense for a fast break layup.

Harris hit her second three of the quarter, with 5:54 to go, to give the Spartans a 40-31 lead. Her jumper with two seconds to play gave the team its first double-digit lead, 50-39, since it lead 16-5 in the first quarter.

San Jose State was up 54-44 with 7:42 to play in the fourth, when it went on a 9-0 run essentially putting the game out of reach. Stevens got things going with a three pointer. Ramos then sank a jumper, on her way to a team-high 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting, followed by a Paris Baird layup. Off an offensive rebound, Ramos capped the spurt with a baseline jumper.

The Spartans would lead by a game-high 20 points with 2:26 to play and cruised to the 14-point victory.

San Jose State shot 56 percent in the second half (15-of-27) to Wyoming's 25 percent (7-of-28) to secure the win. The Spartans also owned the game's rebounding advantage 40-34.

In the first quarter, Wyoming (13-15, 6-12 MW) came out in a man-to-man defense, which the Spartans feasted on. Using its quickness, SJSU scored 10 of its 18 first-quarter points by finishing at the rim. Ramos hit the game's opening bucket, and San Jose State took an 18-11 lead into the second quarter.

The Cowgirls changed their defense to a 2-3 zone in the second quarter and got instant results. In the first four minutes of the period, SJSU missed five straight shots and turned the ball over twice. The Spartans managed just a pair of Smith free throws while Wyoming got hot scoring 15 points of their own. Marta Gomez, who had a game-high 16 points, led her team with eight points in the run, including a pair of three pointers.

In five minutes, including the last minute of the first period, Wyoming went from a nine-point deficit, 18-9, to a six-point lead, 26-20. By the time the teams went to the locker room at the half the Spartans had tied the game 29-29.

The Spartans wrap up the regular season with a game at Boise State on Friday. The winner of that contest will secure the third seed in next week's Mountain West Championship Tournament, while the loser will be the fourth seed. Tip off in Taco Bell Center is set for 6:00 p.m. (PT).
