Berkeley, Calif.---- Donia Momen, Kelli Leabo, McKenna Yates and Carla Toha Vilanova each scored once for #10-San José State University, but the #8-University of California took command late in the first quarter and went on to a 13-4 women's water polo win in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match.
Leabo put the Spartans (9-10, 0-2 MPSF) ahead, 2-1, for their only lead of the contest. Then, the Golden Bears scored seven unanswered goals over the next 16 minutes of action for a commanding 8-2 advantage with just under six minutes left in the third quarter. Toha Vilanova's 28th goal of the season approximately 4:00 later stopped the California scoring surge.
"We started out well. We made a lot of errors in the second quarter, fell behind and could not recover," said San José State head coach Johnny Bega.
Emily Loughlin of Cal led all players in scoring with three goals. Pippa Saunders, Stephanie Mutafyan, Carla Correga each scored twice for the Golden Bears in their home opener.
San José State goalkeeper Alicia Magliocco was credited with five saves. Cal's Madison Tagg stopped three Spartan shots.
The Cal match marked the third consecutive top-10 ranked opponent facing San Jose State in the last three weekends. Overall, the Spartans have taken on 10 opponents ranked in the top-10 at the time of the contest this season and have a 1-9 record.
San Jose State returns to action, Saturday, March 19, in the two-day Zumo LMU Invitational on the Loyola Marymount campus. The Spartans face Whittier College and host Loyola Marymount on day one and Cal State Northridge and Azusa Pacific on March 20.
