Laramie Wyo. --- With the shot clock turned off at the end of regulation, San José State had an opportunity to tie the game, but senior Princeton Onwas was whistled for a charge and with that, San José State fell to Wyoming on the road 81-78.
It was a wire-to-wire game all the way through, with 24 lead changes. Wyoming's Josh Adams, the league's leading scorer, drove the lane and dished it to Jordan Naughton for a dunk to give the Cowboys a 77-74 lead.
Down three, Onwas made two attempts at driving the lane. First, having it knocked away, and then committing the charge. Wyoming (14-17, 7-11 MW) put the game away from the free throw line.
San José State (8-21, 3-14 MW) had an answer for a number of big Wyoming baskets throughout the contest. After a layup and a made free throw by the Cowboys, Brandon Clarke took a pass from Frank Rogers and jammed it down to tie the game, 70-70 with 4:52 to play.
It was Rogers who sank two free throws coming out of a timeout a few minutes later to tie the game 72-72 following an Adams layup. However, poor free throw shooting plagued the Spartans again in a tight game. In the final 10 minutes, Ryan Welage bricked the front end of a one-and-one, while Clarke and Jalen James each missed a pair. The Spartans finished 15-of-23 from the stripe.
The two teams went shot-for-shot throughout the first half. It was Gary Williams, Jr., setting the pace for SJSU with 13 points in the period. Wyoming's Jason McManamen was hot from downtown, hitting three of four, and scored 15 in the period.
Williams' swish from deep with time winding down at the end of the first half gave the Spartans a 42-41 lead at the break.
Five Spartans finished in double-figure scoring, led by Frank Rogers with 15 points. Williams scored 14, Brandon Clarke had 12, Jalen James added 11 and Isaac Thornton rounded the group out with 10.
Adams made the best of his senior night, scoring 28 points with six assists. He made 15 of 17 free throws. Two of the free throws at the 8:24 mark gave him the single-season scoring record at Wyoming.
McManamen finished with 16 points and Alan Herndon and Naughton had 11 points each for the Cowboys.
San José State returns home for their own senior night this Saturday, March 5, at 2:00 p.m. versus Boise State.
