STANFORD, CALIF. - Sophomore Matthew Murray sits in a 11th place tie after day one of The Goodwin to lead the San José State men's golf team, which finds itself in a 13th place tie out of 26 teams.

The Spartans are tied with #40-ranked UCLA at 12-over 292 and ahead of two other ranked teams including #1-ranked USC, who is one shot behind along with Mountain West rivals Fresno State and Nevada.

The Spartans started their round on the 10th hole at the par-70, 6,727 yard Stanford Golf Course, as Murray began his day with a par and a bogey before making birdies in four of the next seven holes. Jump started by a 60-foot birdie on the 12th hole, the Manchester, England, native made birdies on the 14th, 16th and 18th holes to make the turn at three-under.

Murray had seven pars and two bogeys in his last nine holes to round out the day at one-under to place him in a 11th place tie out of the 138 player field.

In the play five, score four format, sophomore Scott Munger had the second lowest score for the Spartans at two-over 72, followed by freshman Kevin Velo's five-over 75 and senior Taylor Bromley's six-over 76 to round out the scoring. Sophomore Brett Thawley shot a seven-over 77.

Munger's round included three birdies, all coming on the par-5 holes at the 16th, 1st and 7th. His 4.00 stroke average on the par-5 holes are tied for second in the field as the Danville, Calif., native shot 36 on both the front and back nines, good for 42nd place tie.

UC Davis is the only team under par at three-under 277 to lead the 26 team field which includes host Stanford's 'A' and 'B' teams.

Luke Vivolo of UC Davis is atop the player leaderboard at five-under 65.

The second round of The Goodwin will continue on Friday with 18 holes. The Spartans will tee it up from the first hole starting with Murray at 1:50 p.m. PT, Thawley at 2:01 p.m., Munger at 2:12 p.m., Velo at 2:23 p.m. and Bromley at 2:34 p.m. Fans can follow all of the round two action with live scoring updates provided by Golfstat (Team Leaderboard, Player Leaderboard).
