STANFORD, Calif. -- The San José State men's golf struggled in the second round of The Goodwin, shooting 20-over 300 to drop nine places to 22nd in a 26 team field.
UC Davis extended its three stroke lead from the first round to 10 shots, over host Stanford, as they are the only two teams shooting under par for the tournament at 11-under (549) and 1-under (559), respectively. The Spartans are at 32-over 592.
Kevin Velo was the bright spot for the Spartans, carding an even par 70, which was the low score for the Spartans by three strokes, played on the par-70, 6,727 yard Stanford Golf Course.
Velo, a freshman from Danville, Calif., had a strong finish to his round as he was three-over heading to the 13th hole, before ripping off four consecutive birdies. He dropped a stroke on the 17th before finishing with a par on the 18th for his even par round.
Scott Munger shares the Spartans low score with Velo after two rounds at five-over 145. The sophomore shot a three-over 73 on Friday as he was one-under through 13 holes but shot four over in the last five holes. The two are tied for 52nd, one shot ahead of the #2-ranked player, Maverick McNealy of Stanford and four shots ahead of #5-ranked Rico Hoey of Southern California.
Sophomore Matthew Murray, the Spartans' first round leader, had a difficult second round shooting eight-over 78 but finished strong by making pars in his last six holes. Murray's two day total is seven-over 147, dropping him tied for 71st.
For the second day in a row, senior Taylor Bromley had the fourth counting score in the play five, score four format, with his 9-over 79 round.
Brett Thawley finished 11-over 81.
UC Davis' Luke Vivolo remains atop the player leaderboard with his three-under 67 round as he is now eight-under 132 for the tournament. Vivolo is one shot ahead of Oregon's Aaron Wise.
The final round of The Goodwin will continue on Saturday with 18 holes. The Spartans will tee it up from the tenth hole, starting with Thawley at 7:30 a.m. PT, Bromley at 7:41 a.m., Murray at 7:52 a.m., Munger at 8:03 a.m. and Velo at 8:14 a.m. Fans can follow all of the final round action with live scoring updates provided by Golfstat (Team Leaderboard, Player Leaderboard).
