STANFORD, Calif. -- The San José State men's golf team finished 24th at The Goodwin in a 26 team field comprised of eight teams ranked in the top-40.

Played at the par-70, 6,727 yard Stanford Golf Course, the Spartans shot a 16-over 296 in the final round on Saturday to finish the tournament at 48-over 888.

"There's nothing worse than poorly played golf," said Spartans head coach John Kennaday. "We're just not taking advantage of the opportunities. It's a matter of course management that we've got to do better. We've got the golf swing, the strokes, all that but when it doesn't go right, we've got to figure out a way to get it done."

Scott Munger's play stood out for the Spartans as the sophomore was the top Spartan finisher (six-over 216) for first time in his career.

"Scotty is making good progress. I'm pretty happy with his approach to learning as he's really getting into it. And that makes a difference because he's got a boat load of talent," said Kennaday.

Munger's final round included two birdies and three bogeys to finish at one-over 71, his best round during the three day tournament. He tied for 41st out of the 138-player field where only nine players finished under par.

Starting on the 10th hole, Kevin Velo went out in five-over 40 but came home in one-under 34. The first-year Spartan ended up in a 63rd place tie with a three round total of nine-over 219.

Matthew Murray shot 38 on both sides for a final round 76. The junior-college transfer bogeyed three holes each on the front and back nine. He ended the tournament at 13-over 223, tying him for 94th place.

Senior Taylor Bromley had his best round of the tournament on Saturday with a five-over 75. The Dublin, Calif., native shot five-over 40 in the first nine holes but steadied himself in the back nine shooting even par 35. Bromley finished tied for 121st at 20-over 230 for the tournament.

Brett Thawley shot 28-over 238 for the tournament finishing in a 135th place tie.

UC Davis took the team championship going wire-to-wire, finishing at 13-under 827 with Luke Vivolo taking the individual medalist honors at 10-under 200.

The Spartans will have two weeks off before getting back to action on April 11 when they host the 70th annual Transamerica-World Financial Group (WFG) Western Intercollegiate Golf Championship.

"We need to move on. I'll be sitting down with the players individually and go through the statistics on what we can do. We'll look at everything from the course setup, to our game plan and map out a strategy and highlight each players strengths and discount the weaknesses to get ready for The Western," said Kennaday.
