#11-Spartans Head To #2-UCLA & Bruin Invite

March 30, 2016

The San Jose State University women's water polo program prides itself on playing one of the nation's most competitive schedules. The #11-ranked Spartans (13-11, 0-3 MPSF) travel to Los Angeles' Spieker Aquatics Complex this weekend for a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match against #2-ranked UCLA (17-2, 2-0 MPSF) on Saturday, April 2, and a pair of non-conference contests against Pomona-Pitzer and Redlands in the Bruin Invitational on Sunday, April 3.

San Jose State's sixth match of the season against a top-five ranked opponent in UCLA is at 1:00 p.m. The matches the next day vs. Pomona-Pitzer and Redlands are at 12:15 and 3:00 p.m., respectively.

The Spartans are coming off an 11-6 loss to undefeated and #1-ranked USC on March 23. San Jose State's goal total matched the fourth most goals scored against USC this season. The Spartans' offense will be tested again against a UCLA team that is playing its home opener and features a defense that has given up 3.87 goals per match during its six-match winning streak.

Senior Rae Lekness continues her stranglehold on the top spot in the MPSF individual scoring race with 70 goals. Lekness scored once against USC for second season of 70 or more goals in her high-scoring career. She scored 76 her sophomore season in 2014.

Freshman Carla Toha Vilanova with 35; junior Donia Momen, 24; and sophomore McKenna Yates with 22 are three more Spartans with at least 20 goals this season. Co-captain Kelli Leabo with a career-high 19 appears to next Spartan to reach the 20-goal plateau in 2015.

UCLA also features five players, India Forster (29), McKenzie Barr (27), Devin Grab (25), Alexa Tielmann (21) and Lizette Rozeboom (20), with at least 20 goals this season.

Pomona-Pitzer (7-11) brings a two-match winning streak to the Bruin Invitational. Redlands (5-16) also had won its last two before taking on Claremont Mudd-Scripps on March 30. Pomona-Pitzer and Redlands face each other on Saturday, April 2.
