Boise, Idaho - Boise State hit eight three-pointers in the second half and pulled away from the San Jose State women's basketball team in the third quarter en route to a 81-69 win in final game of the regular season for both teams.
The loss slots the Spartans into the fourth seed in next weeks Mountain West Basketball Championship. They face the New Mexico Lobos, the fifth seed, at 2:35 p.m. on Tuesday, March 8 in the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.
The teams played an even first half. SJSU, who had been destroyed in the paint by Miquelle Askew's 36 points in the Broncos 78-75 win in San Jose, played great interior defense limiting her to nine points, all in the first half. While the Spartans took away the interior in the first half and trailed 42-40 at the break, they were undone in the second half by the outside shot.
Jasmine Smith hit layup with 7:17 to go in the third for a 47-45 Spartans lead, but over the next four minutes Boise State went on a 12-0 run. Brooke Pahukoa hit a pair of threes in the spurt, on her way to a game-high 26 points, including eight three-pointers, which equaled a Broncos single-game record.
By the time SJSU hit its next bucket, a jumper from Paris Baird with 1:43 left in the period, Boise State (19-11, 12-6 MW) was up 58-50 and took a 63-56 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Spartans (13-16, 11-7 MW) hit the first bucket of the final period, a Baird jumper, to pull within five, 63-58. But Shalen Shaw, who finished with 19 points and 13 rebounds, sank a layup and Pahukoa drained her first of three three-pointers in the fourth to make it a 10-point Boise State lead. From that point on, the team's traded buckets until the 3:07 mark with the Spartans down 81-69.
In the final three minutes neither team could score. They combined to turn the ball over three times and miss eight shots.
Both teams shot the ball well with Boise State hitting 44 percent (28-of-64) to the Spartans 40 percent (25-of-62). SJSU outscored the Broncos 27-to-22 in the paint, but were done in on second chance points 21-to-7.
Dezz Ramos' 19 points led the San Jose State offense. She also equaled her season-high with eight assists. Smith shot 7-of-9 from the field, scored 15 points, and grabbed nine rebounds. Baird was one off her career-high with 14 points.
