Fairfax, Va.----- San Jose State University wide receiver Tim Crawley is one of 15 male semifinalists for the annual Arthur Ashe, Jr., Sports Scholar Award given by Diverse Issues in Higher Education, the only national news magazine devoted to diversity issues in higher education.
The award honors tennis great Arthur Ashe and was established in 1992 to honor undergraduate students of color who exemplify the ideals promoted by Mr. Ashe. More than 1,000 male and female student-athletes were nominated for 2016 consideration. A nominee must compete in an intercollegiate sport, maintain a 3.20 or higher cumulative grade-point average and have a history of participating in community service activities.
Crawley, who completed his junior season for the 2015 Cure Bowl champions, was third on the Spartans with personal bests of 39 receptions, 424 receiving yards and five touchdown receptions. The senior-to-be from Santa Clara, scored a sixth touchdown on a fumble recovery last season.
A business management information systems major, he is a 2015 College Sports Information Directors of America District VIII honoree, a two-time member of the Mountain West's All-Academic team, a Mountain West Scholar-Athlete. Last spring marked the second consecutive year he was named a San Jose State University Dean's Scholar for earning at least a 3.65 grade-point average in multiple semesters.
His community service activities include assisting with the University's fall semester on-campus housing move-in days, serving as a volunteer for various play days with autistic children and a Fellowship of Christian Athletes event, and representing his teammates at a Florida Hospital visit during the 2015 AutoNation Cure Bowl.
The national male and female winners will be profiled in the April 21 issue of the magazine.
