San Jose, Calif.----- McKenna Yates scored San Jose State University's first two goals of the match, but Stanford University shut out the Spartans' top two scorers, senior Rae Lekness and freshman Carla Toha Vilanova, en route to a 17-3 win in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) women's water polo opener for both teams.
Lekness came into the match as the conference's leading scorer with 52 goals and was held scoreless for the first time this season. Toha Vilanova had 27 goals including five in two previous non-conference matches against #3-Stanford (13-2, 1-0 MPSF).
"They (the Cardinal) zeroed in on Rae. They either double-teamed her or had their best defender on her," said San Jose State head coach Johnny Bega whose team trailed the entire match after Stanford's first score three minutes into the contest. The Cardinal scored 17 times against the Spartans for the second time this season.
"We looked to set the tone at the beginning, but we let on up on transition. Stanford is a great transition team. We gave up a lot of counter attack goals. If our offense is not clicking on all cylinders and if we're not all playing at a high level, we're in trouble.
"Overall, our defense just wasn't there. If we're not making stops and not scoring, that makes it really tough."
#10-ranked San Jose State (9-9, 0-1 MPSF) had its chances to score, but Stanford goalkeeper Julia Hermann had her second double-digit save performance against the Spartans this season with 10 stops.
Kelli Leabo accounted for San Jose State's final goal in the fourth quarter.
Tayler Peters started in goal for the Spartans and played three quarters. She was credited with three saves. Sara Northam replaced Peters for the fourth quarter and stopped two shots.
Three Stanford players, Kat Klass, Dani Jackovich and Jamie Neushul, scored multiple times. Klass led all players with five. Jackovich and Neushul had three each.
San Jose State returns to conference play on March 12 taking on #6-California in Berkeley in a 1:00 p.m. match.
