Windy Conditions Challenges Men's Golf In RD 1 At Bandon Dunes Championship

Round 1 Results

Bandon, Ore. - Blustery conditions at Bandon Trails Course confounded the field at The Bandon Dunes Championship on Sunday as none of the 12 teams broke par with only three players breaking par. Clemson sits atop the team leaderboard at six-over 290 with San José State 34 shots behind.

"This is why we come up here, for the challenge. You get the wind and the rain, and sometimes it can blow so hard, you can't look up," said Spartans head coach John Kennaday as he estimated the wind gusts to be between 30 and 40 miles per hour at times.

"We have to man up and figure it out. We have to focus on being fully committed to our actions, especially under these circumstances," continued Kennaday as similar weather conditions are expected on Monday's second round.

Scott Munger led the Spartans at seven-over 78, as he finished the round with six straight pars on the par-71, 6,682 yard Bandon Trails Course. The redshirt sophomore is tied for 41st in the tournament.

Fellow sophomore Henrik Sohlberg, who is playing as an individual, shot an eight-over 79, tied for 50th. It was the Ekero, Sweden native's, first tournament play in the spring season and second overall during the 2015-16 season.

In a 57th place tie are sophomore Brett Thawley and redshirt freshman Bradley Keyer, who played as an individual, as they shot nine-over 80. Keyer had three out of the team's seven birdies.

Sophomore Matthew Murray, freshman Kevin Velo and senior Taylor Bromley each shot in the 80s, respectively.

Hayden Buckley of Missouri, Joe Harvie of Seattle University and Bryson Nimmer of Clemson were the only players who shot under par for the day.

The second round of The Bandon Dunes Championship will continue on Monday with 18 holes. The teams will tee it off at 8:30 a.m. PST with a shotgun start. Fans can follow all of the round two action with live scoring updates provided by Golfstat (Team Leaderboard, Player Leaderboard).
