March 8, 2016

Las Vegas, Nev. --- San José State's freshman forward Brandon Clarke is the Mountain West's Sixth Man of the Year. The conference's announcement on Tuesday made history as Clarke becomes first freshman to win the award since its inception in 2008-09."This award is tribute to Brandon's work ethic throughout the whole year," said San José State head coach Dave Wojcik. "He's a guy who comes early for practices, and stays late to shoot. I'm really excited for Brandon and his family."The 6-foot-8 Clarke averaged 10.1 points and 7.3 rebounds per game during conference play in 2015-16. He also led the team with 37 blocks, which puts makes him eighth on SJSU's single-season record list for blocks, where he is the only freshman. All five double-doubles for the Phoenix, Ariz., native this season came against Mountain West Foes. Including his season-high 21 points and 10 rebounds in the 68-63 victory over Boise State in the regular season finale."Brandon progressed extremely well throughout the season," Wojcik said. "He got bigger, stronger and more comfortable with the speed of the game. But what sets Brandon apart is his mind. He's a very intelligent player, and has a high IQ."Clarke, who finished second in the league in blocks, becomes San José State's first postseason Mountain West men's basketball award winner. The nod for Sixth Man of the Year is also a first in SJSU men's basketball history.Wyoming's Josh Adams is the Mountain West player of the year. San Diego State Aztecs Skylar Spencer and Jeremy Hemsley are the Defensive Player of the Year and Freshmen of the Year respectively. SDSU head coach Steve Fisher is the league's Coach of the Year.
