Men's Golf Finishes 12th At The Bandon Dunes Championship

Final Results

BANDON, Ore. - The final round of The Bandon Dunes Championship concluded on Tuesday with the San José State men's golf team finishing 12th in a 12-team field. None of the teams broke par for the tournament as the rain and wind, with gusts getting up to 45 miles per hour, picked up again in the final round where the best score of the day belonged to Washington with a five-over round.

With a tee-time temperature of 37 degrees on the par-71, 6,682 yard Bandon Trails course, sophomore Matthew Murray turned in the best round of the day for the Spartans with a five-over 76. He finished the tournament at 19-over 232, good for a 51st place tie. The junior college transfer was one-under through 13 holes but finished with two bogeys and a double bogey in his last five holes.

Also tied for 51st was freshman Bradley Keyer where he played the first 16 holes in two-over until disaster struck on the next to last hole at the eighth. At the par-4 eighth, Keyer shot a 10 and bogeyed the next hole to finish the day at nine-over 80.

"Bradley Keyer made great progress this week as he's getting close to having regular starter status," said Kennaday. "We also saw some flashes of brilliance from Mr. Matthew Murray. I think flashes of brilliance are showing but its not quite sustaining."

Along with Murray, freshman Kevin Velo had the other round in the 70s for the Spartans, shooting a seven-over 78. Velo finished the tournament in a 58th place tie.

Scott Munger and Brett Thawley finished tied for 67th as Taylor Bromley finished 69th.

"This is not a fun part of the process, but necessary to be any good," commented Spartans head coach John Kennaday. "My kids are getting thrown into the deep end of the pool, so to speak, as some are learning to swim and others will need to figure it out but we'll get there."

The three ranked teams in the field, #9 Clemson, #30 Washington and #39 UAB finished atop the team leaderboard, in that order as Clemons shot a two-over 854. Washington finished 17 shots behind for second at 19-over 871. UAB was 27-over.

Utah Valley's Blair Bursey took the individual medalist honors shooting five-under 208 as only four players finished par or better.

The Spartans play next at The Goodwin in Stanford, Calif. from March 24 to 26.
