The San Jose State University women's water polo team aims to even its Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) record against the University of California, Saturday, March 12, at the Spieker Aquatic Complex. Match time is 1:00 p.m.
The Spartans (9-9, 0-1 MPSF) head into their second MPSF contest seeking to atone for a disappointing 17-3 loss to #3-Stanford in their conference opener. Despite the loss, San Jose State remained 10th in the weekly national coaches poll. Playing their third consecutive top-10 ranked team, the Spartans also want to end a two-match losing streak.
San Jose State still has the MPSF's top scorer for the season in Rae Lekness. The senior from Calgary, Alberta, has 52 goals, but was kept off the scoresheet for the first time in 2016 in the March 5 match against Stanford. Carla Toha Vilanova (27), McKenna Yates (17), Kelli Leabo (14), Donia Momen (13) and Cara Robinson (11) are five more Spartans to score at least 10 goals this season.
For #8-ranked Cal (16-4, 0-0 MPSF), the Golden Bears split their last six matches, losing to #6-UC Davis, #4-Hawaii and #5-Michigan by no more than two goals in each contest. Sophomore Carla Carrega is Cal's leading scorer with 43 goals and third in the MPSF in scoring average behind San Jose State's Lekness and University of Southern California's Stephania Haralabidis.
