Munger Tied For 13th At The Western; Team 11th

Western Results - RD1

Santa Cruz, Calif. - Scott Munger led the San José State men's golf team with a one-under 69 as the team finds itself in 11th place after day one of the 70th edition of the Transamerica-WFG Western Intercollegiate.

Munger is six-shots behind the leader, Aaron Wise of Oregon, who matched the Western Intercollegiate tournament record seven-under 63, set by Jason Allred of Pepperdine in 2000 and John Streibich of Xavier in 2007.

"Scotty's getting better and better and continuing to see progress as a redshirt sophomore," said Spartans head coach John Kennaday.

The Danville, Calif., native's round included four birdies, all within a seven hole span from the eighth to 14th holes. His round also included a bogey and a double bogey.

Among the Spartans, Munger has either led or had the second lowest score in the first round of each of the five spring tournaments.

The next low score for the Spartans belonged to Matthew Murray with a two-over 72, good for the 38th place tie. The first year Spartan from Manchester, England made the turn at even-par 35 and shot a two-over 37 in the back nine, finishing with back-to-back birdies.

In the count five, play six format, freshman Kevin Velo had the third counting score at three-over 73, tying him for 50th place as senior Taylor Bromley and redshirt freshman Bradley Keyer rounded the scoring for the Spartans with a five-over 75, sitting in a 64th place tie.

Henrik Sohlberg, starting for the second time this season, finished at eight-over 78.

"We did ok with the game plan," said Kennaday. "It was nice to have several guys in there for the first time in The Western. No matter how they do, it's good to get their feet wet, so to speak," referring to Murray, Velo and Keyer.

Oregon is atop the team leaderboard at nine-under 341, as seven of the top-nine teams are ranked in the top-26 of GolfStat's ranking.

The second round of the Western Intercollegiate will continue on Tuesday with 18 holes. The teams will tee it off at 8:45 a.m. PST with a shotgun start. Fans can follow all of the round two action with live scoring updates provided by Golfstat (Team Leaderboard, Player Leaderboard).
