Six-Run Sixth Secures 9-2 Spartans Victory

April 16, 2016

Final Stats

San Jose, Calif. - Jessica Madrid hit a bases clearing, three-RBI double to start a six-run two-out rally in the bottom of the sixth inning extending a 3-2 lead to 9-2 and propeling the San José State Spartans a victory over the San Diego State Aztecs on Saturday afternoon on SJSU Field.

The Madrid (2-for-4, R, 3 RBI) double was the first of three doubles in the next four batters, and was capped with a two-RBI double from Taylor Purdy. Purdy finished the game with three RBI having hit a solo home run in the second inning to tie the game at 1-1.

In the circle for San José State (19-20, 8-3 MW) Katelyn Linford earned her fifth win of the season pitching six innings, allowing just three Aztec hits and two runs. She walked two and struck out three.

San Diego State (23-19, 5-9 MW) got two of their three base knocks in the first inning and scored a run to take a 1-0 lead.

Purdy (3-for-4, 2 R, 3 RBI, HR) responded in the bottom of the second with the Spartans first hit of the day of SDSU starter Ashley Ercolano. She took a 0-1 pitch and hammered it over the left field fence for her second round tripper of the year. It tied the game at 1-1.

Linford set down nine of the next 10 batters she face, allowing just a walk to open the fourth. Her only mistake was to Jenavee Peres who led off the sixth. Peres hit her second home run in as many days and cut what was then a 3-1 lead to 3-2.

San José State had built its 3-1 lead on a pair of sacrifice flies. With Purdy on third in the bottom of the fourth, Anissa Pinedo lifted a ball to center field, which was caught for an out, but allowed Purdy to score. In the fifth, Madison Aurin (1-for-3, R, RBI) did the same thing, a fly ball out to center field. Madrid, who was on third, scored the team's third run of the game.

Leading 3-2 entering the bottom of the sixth, the SJSU bats, which banged out 12 hits on the day, blew the game open. With one out, Emma Entzminger (1-for-2, R) walked, Alyssa Avila (2-for-2, R) singled and two batters later Brittany Abacherli walked to load them up. Madrid's blast was inches from going out, but cleared the bases, and gave the Spartans a 6-2 cushion.

Madrid's double spelled the end of the day for Alex Formby (9-8), who would take the loss. She went 4.1 innings in relief, giving up six hits, six runs. Julie McDonald came on as the third pitcher of the game for SDSU, but faired little better.

The first batter McDonald faced was Jessie Hufstetler (2-for-3, R, RBI) who doubled in pinch runner Julia Gallegos. Aurin singled and moved into scoring position when Hufstetler advanced to third. Purdy competed the hit parade with a double down the left field line bringing in both base runners and making the score 9-2.

In the sixth the Spartans sent 10 batters to the place scored six times on five hits, three of which were for extra bases.

Emily Rogers set the Aztecs down in order in the seventh to secure the Spartans win and set up a rubber game on Sunday afternoon at 12:00 p.m. on SJSU Field.
