Leander Sixth After First Round Of MW Women's Golf Championship

Rancho Mirage, Calif.--San José State women's golfer My Leander is tied for sixth at 73 after the first round of the 2016 Mountain West Women's Golf Championship being played on the Dinah Shore Tournament Course at the Mission Hills Country Club in Mission Hills, Calif.

Leander led the Spartans with her one-over 73. She made 15 pars, one birdie and two bogeys during her round. On the front nine, she made pars on every hole but the par-four #4 (bogey), and shot even over the back nine with a birdie on the par-five #11, a bogey on the par-four #16 and seven pars.

"My made some nice par saves today during her round," said Spartan head coach John Dormann. "She worked hard all day for every par she got."

Two other Spartans are tied for 19th after the first round. Regan De Guzman shot a 77 for her first round. She was the only Spartan to record multiple birdies during her round, making them on the par-three #5 and the par-four #13. Abegail Arevalo also shot a 77. She was even par through the front nine, making a bogey on the first hole but rebounding with a birdie on the par-three #5. The back nine gave her the most problems as she was five-over par on those nine holes.

Alexandra Cooper recorded a 78 with a birdie on the par-four #15. She made 11 pars during her round. Elizabeth Schultz rounded out the scoring with an 81.

San José State shot a 305 in the first round of the three-round tournament and is in fifth place after the first day, 10 shots behind the leader UNLV. SJSU leads the tournament, along with San Diego State, in par-three scoring at 3.10, +2. The Spartans made 57 pars during the round but just six birdies.

"We are playing on a championship course where the first LPGA major is played every year. You have to be precise off the tee because the fairways are firm and the greens are rolling very fast. If you mess up one thing, making a bogey can be hard. The course was set up extremely hard with pin locations I have never seen in the many years I have been to this course.

"With that said though, we need to take better advantage of the par-five holes. The par-three holes are difficult because the greens are sloped and undulated. I am happy we played well on those holes," said Dormann.

The second round of the MW Championship begins Tuesday morning at 7 a.m. The Spartans begin the round at 7:45 a.m. with New Mexico and Colorado State.
