Arevalo Shoots 68 In Final Round Of MW Championship

Rancho Mirage, Calif-- San José State freshman Abegail Arevalo shot the lowest round of the 2016 Mountain West Women's Golf Championship on Wednesday and finished sixth at 222 in the individual standings. The Spartans finished fourth in the team standings at 906.

Arevalo shot the low round of the tournament on Wednesday with her four-under 68. In only her fourth collegiate tournament, she shot her first under-par round. Arevalo was four-under par after her first nine holes, making birdies on #3, #4, #6 and #9. After a bogey on #10, she made four consecutive pars before finishing the round birdie-bogey-par-birdie.

"Abby played well today," said Spartan head coach John Dormann. "Her ball striking was solid, and her short game and putting finally came around. We bought her a new putter a couple of weeks ago, and she started making her putts. Her short game has improved a lot since the beginning of the semester. I am proud and excited for her and what the future may hold."

Elizabeth Schultz shot a three-over 75 in the final round and finished 29th at 232. She made three birdies during her round (#2, #4, #9) and was one-under par over her first nine holes. Schultz then made six pars and two bogeys over the next eight holes before a double bogey on #18 found her at 75 for the day.

"I am really happy for Abby and Liz today. It was good to see Liz have a solid round despite her last hole," said Dormann.

My Leander finished tied for 13th at 226 after shooting a 78 in the final round. Regan De Guzman tied for 21st at 230 as she recorded a 79 on Wednesday. Alexandra Cooper tied for 33rd at 235 and shot a 78 in the final round.

San José State shot its lowest round of the championship on Wednesday with a 299 and finished fourth at 906. UNLV won the championship at 877 and shot a 288 in the final round. Rebel Alexandra Kaui won the individual title at four-under 212 after finished the championship with a 69.

"We still have to work on getting four good scores during the round. We just cannot seem to get four good scores at the same time."

The Spartans now wait to see if they are one of the 64 teams selected for the NCAA Regionals, May 5-7. The announcement will be made this Monday, April 25, at 3 p.m. PDT, on the Golf Channel. The four regionals this year are at the Stanford Golf Course, Stanford, Calif.; Traditions Club, Bryan, Texas; University Club, Baton Rouge, La.; Shoal Creek, Shoal Creek, Ala. At each regional, 18 teams and six individuals will compete to advance to the NCAA Championships, May 20-25, at the Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore. Six teams and three individuals will advance from each regional to the championship.
