TUCSON, Ariz. - San José State men's golfer Taylor Bromley is tied for 23rd after the first round of the 2016 Mountain West Championship being played on the Catalina course at Omni Tucson National.
Bromley shot an even par 72 to lead the Spartans. The senior carded a team-high four birdies, making three of them in the front nine to make the turn at one-under. In the back nine, he made a birdie on the 15th to go along with bogeys on the 14th and 18th to finish his round at even par. Friday's round of 72 was Bromley's best round at the two Championships he's played.
"Bromley's shown significant improvement from last year. He's done some great work and I'm really proud of him," said Spartans head coach John Kennaday.
While each Spartan in the starting lineup had previously played on the par-72, 7,194-yard Catalina course during the National Invitational Tournament earlier in the spring season, only Bromley and Scott Munger had played in a Mountain West Championship. The two, along with Bradley Keyer shot the lowest scores for the Spartans on Friday.
Munger got off to a solid start in his round making birdies in the first two holes before giving it back with a double bogey on the fourth. The redshirt sophomore followed up with eight straight pars until making a birdie on the 13th to go one-under. Munger shot three-over in the last five holes to finish his round at two-over 74, tying him for 39th along with Keyer.
Keyer also got off to a strong start, making birdies in three of the first four holes. But he bogeyed four of the next five holes to make the turn at one-over. The redshirt freshman played the back nine at one-over to finish at two-over 74.
Sophomore Matthew Murray had the final counting score for the Spartans in the play five, count four scoring format by shooting a three-over 75, tied of 44th.
Freshman Kevin Velo shot three-over in the front and back nine to finish at six-over 78, placing him tied for 53rd.
The Spartans are in 11th place at seven-over 295, 20-shots off the leader Fresno State.
Corey Eddings of Nevada leads the player leaderboard at seven-under 65.
"We got off to a good start today as we're hitting better than we're scoring," said Kennaday. "The boys are getting close as we'll keep banging at it. Hopefully our scoring catches up to our ball striking tomorrow. We've got to believe in ourselves."
The second round of the Mountain West Championship will continue on Saturday with 18 holes. The Spartans will tee it up from the first hole starting with Velo at 7:00 a.m. MT, Murray at 7:08 a.m., Keyer at 7:16 a.m., Munger at 7:24 a.m. and Bromley at 7:32 a.m. Fans can follow all of the round two action with live scoring updates provided by Golfstat.
