Tucson, Ariz. - The San José State University men's golf team improved each day of the Mountain West Championship to finish in eighth place.
The Spartans shot a three-under 285 on Sunday's final round, one of just four teams under par, with two players under par, one at even par and another at one-over par. Sunday's round was a four-shot improvement from the second round (289, T10th) and a 10-shot improvement from the first round (295, 11th).
"It made my year to see these guys put one together. They hung in tough and put in a great round. We actually played well the whole tournament as we could have scored lower, but you could play well and the score might not necessarily reflect it. These guys played well this week," said Spartans head coach John Kennaday.
Leading the Spartans was senior Taylor Bromley, who had a career best round of three-under 69 which helped him to a 20th place tie for his best finish at San José State. The Dublin, Calif., native had four birdies on the day and 14 for the tournament, the second most in the field, to conclude his senior campaign at one-under 215.
"Everything Taylor did this year to get himself better, it can't help but make you feel good," said a proud Kennaday. "He busted his butt to make changes to his game, which was not easy to do. The result is you saw a 24-shot improvement from last year's tournament and his first round under 70."
Scott Munger had the other round under par for the Spartans on Sunday, shooting a one-under 71 after posting back to back rounds of 74. For the championship, the third-year Spartan shot three-over 219 for his best finish of the season with a 30th place tie. It was a 10-shot improvement over last year's championship.
Playing in his first Mountain West Championship, Kevin Velo had his second consecutive round of even par 72 on Sunday after an opening round 78. The freshman from Danville, Calif., finished tied for 36th at six-over 222 (78-72-72) along with fellow first-year Spartan Matt Murray (75-69-78).
Redshirt freshman Bradley Keyer rounded out the Spartan scoring with a one-over 73 to close out the tournament at seven-over 223 (74-76-73), placing him in a 39th place tie.
UNLV took the team championship with the low round of the day at nine-under 279 to overtake second round leader New Mexico. UNLV shot 18-under 846 for the championship.
Trevor Clayton of Fresno State took the individual medalist honors at nine-under 207.
"We're excited to be able to post a final round like today and to do it with three newcomers excites me. It's a really good sign. It's been a tough year, but we never gave up," said Kennaday.
