#11-Spartans Out Home Schedule With Senior Day Doubleheader

April 6, 2016

With two weeks remaining in the regular season, the San Jose State University women's water polo team hosts top-10 ranked Arizona State University in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) contest and Cal State Monterey Bay in a non-conference match on Saturday, April 9.

The doubleheader at The Aquatics Center starts at 11:00 a.m. with the #11th ranked Spartans (15-12, 0-4 MPSF) taking on #5-Arizona State (15-5, 2-2 MPSF) at 11:00 a.m. and closing out the home schedule with unranked Cal State Monterey Bay (5-20) at 5:00 p.m. In between, Cal State Monterey Bay and Arizona State have a 2:00 p.m. non-conference match.

San Jose State will be celebrating Senior Day prior to the Arizona State. The Spartans have three seniors, Brittany Krappe, co-captain Kelli Leabo and San Jose State career-scoring leader Rae Lekness, who will be honored in pre-match ceremonies.

With a two-match non-conference winning streak heading into the Arizona State contest, the Spartans seek their first conference win of the season. San Jose State's most recent victory was a school-record for scoring 28-8 victory over Redlands. The previous school record for goals in a match was 22 on three occasions.

San Jose State coach Johnny Bega hopes his squad gets off to a good start in each match. In the Spartans' last five wins, San Jose State came out of the first quarter with a lead.

Arizona State is taking on the Spartans for the second time in 2016. The Sun Devils eked out a 7-6 win over San Jose State in the ninth-place game of the UC Irvine Invitational at the end of February.

Arizona State is coming off its biggest win of the season -- another 7-6 victory over #7-Cal in the third sudden-victory period following overtime on a MPSF match. Freshman Maud Koopman is the Sun Devils' top scorer with 26 goals. Seniors Daisy Carter and Katie Svercheck have 24 scores. Ao Gao, a third senior at Arizona State, played for the Chinese National Team in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Cal State Monterey Bay and San Jose State are meeting for the second time this season. The Spartans topped the Otters, 15-9, in a LouStrong Memorial tournament match the first weekend of the season. Cal State Monterey Bay ended a nine-match losing streak on April 2 with a 14-13 overtime win against Sonoma State.

There is no admission charge for any of the three April 9 matches at The Aquatics Center. Parking is available one block away at the campus' 7th Street Garage.
