Women's Tennis Goes For Two In A Row At #64-Long Beach State

April 8, 2016

The San Jose State University women's tennis team seeks its third two-match winning streak of the season when the Spartans take on #64-ranked Long Beach State at the Rhodes Tennis Center, Saturday, April 9. First serve in doubles play is at 10:00 a.m.

San Jose State (9-7) is coming off a 4-3 win over Mountain West opponent San Diego State on April 3. The Spartans won the doubles point and Sybille Gauvain at #1, Marie Klocker at #2 and Miyo Kobayashi at #5 picked up singles victories for the team win.

Coach Chad Skorupka's crew faces a hot Long Beach State team (14-4) boasting a seven-match winning streak. The 49ers have a pair of 7-0 sweep victories in their last three matches.

The Spartans' non-conference match with the 49ers features the top-three female college players from France according to the Universal Tennis Rating system. San Jose State's Marie Klocker and Sybille Gauvain are ranked two and three while Long Beach State's Maeva Razakasoa is number-one. Razakasoa is ranked #77 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) April 6 singles rankings and has a 23-8 singles win-loss record. Klocker leads the Spartans with 21 singles triumphs this season.

It is likely Gauvain and Razakasoa will face each other in the number-one singles position nearly 5,800 miles away from home.

San Jose State also has its place in the ITA rankings. The doubles team of Klocker and Gaelle Rey is ranked #86.

Following the Long Beach State dual match, the Spartans close out their regular season with home matches against Mountain West opponents Fresno State on April 15 and Nevada on April 16. Each match starts at 12:00 p.m. (PDT). Senior Day is against Nevada and Justine Deleval, the team's only senior will be recognized prior to the start of the match.
