Clovis, Calif. --- In just her second heptathlon, freshman Kolbi Sims is in eighth place and in the hunt to score points for the San José State women's track and field team in the opening event of the 2016 Mountain West Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Veterans Memorial Stadium.Sims stacked up 2,938 points through the first four events, which include the 100-hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200-meter dash. Sims eclipsed the first-day total from her heptathlon debut earlier this season at the California Invitational Combined (4/13)."Kolbi had a good day," said Spartans' head coach Jeff Petersmeyer. "This is just her second heptathlon and it's the first one for Leah (Lambert). I thought they both looked great today and I'm excited to see what we can get out of tomorrow."The top-eight athletes at the conclusion of tomorrow's final three events will register team points for the overall championship.In the opening event of the hep, Leah Lambert clocked a season-best 14.98 and finished 10th in the 100-hurdles. Lambert finished the day with 2,602 points and in 16th place.Sims' top finish of the day came in the high jump, where she finished sixth out of 17 with a height of 1.61 meters. Sims took seventh place in the shot put with a distance of 10.63 meters.Colorado State's Jessica Green holds the lead with 3,347 points over Nevada's Nicole Wadden with 3,272. San Diego State's Karsen Sper holds the sixth and final scoring position with 3,039 points.The women's heptathlon concludes tomorrow with the long jump, javelin throw and 800 meters.
