100-Plus Student-Athletes, Coaches & Staff Celebrate University Commencement

May 28, 2016

From a family's first-time college graduates to bachelor's degree and advanced degrees recipients, more than 100 San Jose State University current and former student-athletes, coaches and staff are celebrating their academic achievements at commencement and graduation ceremonies through May 29.

World-renowned sports sociologist Dr. Harry Edwards (Class of '64) received an honorary doctorate of humane letters and delivered the commencement address in Spartan Stadium. Dr. Edwards was a two-sport San Jose State student-athlete as a starting center and team captain on the men's basketball team and a school record holder in the discus throw while competing in track and field.

• At least five former Spartan student-athletes will be hooded as a recipient of a Doctor of Nursing Practice or a master's degree.

• At least 65 Spartans are participating in ceremonies for a bachelor of arts or bachelor of science degree.

• Fifteen of these bachelor's degree recipients are graduating with cum laude, summa cum laude or magna cum laude honors.

"We congratulate our student-athletes, coaches and staff who are graduating this weekend. We are proud of their successful work and accomplishments in the classroom," says deputy director of athletics Marie Tuite.

"Several of our student-athlete graduates will look to pursue a master's degree. Others will begin a professional career in their chosen field. We wish each of our graduates the best and look forward to hearing of their terrific accomplishments. Once a Spartan, always a Spartan!"
