San José, Calif.--The San José State women's golf team makes its 22nd regional appearance this week as the team travels up Interstate 280 for the NCAA Women's Golf Stanford Regional. The three days of action will take place at the Stanford Golf Course on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, May 5-7.
San José State is seeded 14th at the regional and received an at-large bid. The top-six teams at the regional advance to the NCAA Championship, May 20-25, in Eugene, Ore. The top-three individuals, not on an advancing team, also advance to the championship.
For the regional, the Spartan lineup consists of Regan De Guzman, My Leander, Elizabeth Schultz, Abegail Arevalo and Alexandra Cooper.
The Spartans begin play Thursday morning, teeing off the 10th hole with Pepperdine and UC Riverside. The teams begin the first round at 8:30 a.m. PDT, at nine-minute intervals. Tee times for Friday and Saturday will be determined by order of finish.
The regional field consists of 18 teams and six individuals. The Stanford Regional includes the defending national champion Stanford, Southern California, Arkansas, Virginia, UNLV, San Diego State, Texas Tech, Ohio State, Colorado, Wake Forest, Michigan State, North Carolina, Pepperdine, San José State, UC Riverside, Idaho, Richmond and Seton Hall.
San José State has won two team regional titles - 1994 and 1995. In 1994, the team was first out of 19 teams at West Regional played at the UNM Championship Golf Course in Albuquerque, N.M. The 1995 team tied for first with Arizona State at the Randolph-North course in Tucson, Ariz.
Madeleine Ziegert is the only Spartan player to ever win a regional title. She was the co-medalist at the 2010 West Regional held at the Stanford Golf Course and opened the tournament with a four-under 67.
San José State is very familiar with the Stanford Golf Course. The Spartans played two tournaments on the course this year - Stanford Intercollegiate and the Peg Barnard Invitational. The last two times the regional has been played at Stanford, San José State has rallied in the final round of each to advance to the NCAA Championships (2010 & 2013).
The other three regionals this weekend will be played in Baton Rouge, La.; Bryan, Texas; and Shoal Creek, Ala.
