Stanford, Calif.- My Leander led the San José State women's golf team with a 73 in the second round of the NCAA Stanford Regional at the Stanford Golf Course and is currently tied for 21st at 146. The Spartans ended the day shooting a 301 and are in 14th place after two rounds.
Leander started her second round making eight consecutive pars (#10 to 17) before a bogey on #18 left her at one-over par for the first nine holes. Over her final nine holes (#1-9), she made six pars and birdie to finish the day at two-over par 73, duplicating her round-one score.
Regan De Guzman made an improvement in her score during round two, shooting a 74, and is tied for 44th at 150. She also made pars on eight of her first nine holes of the day. However, she struggled a bit more on her nine holes, making two birdies, three pars and four bogeys to finish at three-over par for the round.
Abegail Arevalo shot another 76 and is tied for 56th at 152. She made two birdies during her round (#12 & #7) and nine pars. Elizabeth Schultz shot 79 and is tied for 62nd at 153. She had just one birdie and 11 pars. However, a triple bogey on #14 and a double bogey on #15 left her at eight-over par for the day. Alexandra Cooper shot 78 and is tied for 70th at 154.
San José State shot a 301 and is in 14th place at 600. The top-six teams advance out of the regional to the NCAA Championships, May 20-24, in Eugene, Ore. The Spartans are just nine shots out of sixth place (North Carolina 591). Stanford shot a four-under 280 in the second round and leads the regional by two shots over Southern California.
"We just didn't make birdies today," said Spartan head coach John Dormann. "We were not hitting it close and did not have many looks over the first nine holes. We were playing okay after the first nine holes but got caught in a logjam making our turn (at hole one). We had almost a 40-minute delay to play the front nine because we were waiting for the final groups to tee off.
"We hung in there today. We need to play another solid round tomorrow and see what happens."
Final round action for San José State begins at 8:30 a.m. off of #10, as the team plays with Texas Tech and Idaho. Live scoring is available at http://www.golfstatresults.com/public/leaderboards/gsnav.cfm?pg=team&tid=9989
