Spartans' Bats Continue To Hammer Broncos

May 7, 2016

Final Stats

Boise, Idaho - First pitch of San Jose State softball's game against the Boise State Broncos was moved up three hours in order to avoid afternoon rain showers. The rain from the sky never came, but the Spartans rained run-after-run on the Broncos in a 13-0 destruction on Saturday afternoon.

The Spartans pounded out 11 hits on the day, six for extra-bases. In the two games of this series, SJSU has 15 extra base hits and among them seven home runs. Including yesterday's 17-run outburst, SJSU has scored 30 runs in 11 innings against Boise State pitching.

Boise State (13-35, 5-15 MW) starter Paige Reimann, struggled through out the 1.1 innings she was in the circle. In the first, she threw three illegal pitches and issued two walks. It all came back to haunt her when Madison Aurin (2-for-3, 2 R, 5 RBI, HR) crushed a 3-2 pitch over the right field fence and staked SJSU to a 3-0 lead.

In the second, she faced six Spartan batters but was able to retire only one. The first four reached base safely. Chelsea Jenner (1-for-3, R, RBI) drove in a run on a double and Brittany Abacherli singled in another. An error on Abacherli's hit allowed an additional run in to make it 6-0. After an out, a walk to Jessica Madrid put runners on the corners and ended the day for Reimann.

Reliever Shawna Burke entered and on her first pitch of the game Jessie Hufstetler (2-for-2, 3 R, 3 RBI, HR) hammered a shot to straightaway center, which nearly went out of the stadium. It was her second three-run homer of the series. San José State led 9-0 after an inning and a half.

The offense took a breather in the third inning, but in the fourth the Spartans got right back at it.

After pinch hitter Kristen Heffley was retired to lead off the fourth, six batters in a row reached base safely, including five straight hits. The big shots were an Aurin two-run double and a Taylor Purdy (1-for-2, R, 2 RBI, HR) two-run homer to make it 13-0.

In the circle for San José State (24-24, 13-7 MW), Katelyn Linford tossed a three-hit gem. She struck out two and allowed two walks in shutting out the Broncos, improving her record to 8-10 on the season.

SJSU goes for the series sweep on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. (MT).
