Women's Golf Finishes 2015-16 With Solid Round At NCAA Stanford Regional

Stanford, Calif.--With nothing to lose and everything to gain on Saturday, the San José State women's golf team went out and shot the sixth-lowest score at a regional in school history with a four-over par 288 and finished ninth at the NCAA Stanford Regional with an 888.

The Spartans shot one of the lowest rounds of the day by a team and flirted with earning a spot to the NCAA Championships. The team finished five shots out of sixth place (Virginia, 883). They also made the biggest jump in the standings, moving five spots from 14th to ninth.

One highlight of the round for San José State was Alexandra Cooper's hole-in-one on the par-three, fourth hole that was playing at 156 Saturday. The pin was on the back right of the hole. Using her six-iron, Cooper carried the ridge and the ball tracked straight to the hole.

All five Spartans shot between 71 and 74 in the final round. Freshman Abegail Arevalo led the team with an even-par 71 to lead the team and finished tied for 33rd at 223. With the Spartans starting the day on #10, Arevalo went birdie-par-birdie to start the day. She had three birdies over her first nine holes and player her final nine holes at one-over with eight consecutive pars before finishing with a bogey on #9.

My Leander shot another consistent score for the Spartans with a 74 in the final round and had the team's best finish as she tied for 22nd at 220. She made 14 pars and a birdie during her round.

Regan De Guzman finished her Spartan career with a 73 in her final round and tied for 33rd at 223. She made a chip-in eagle on the par-five, 477-yard #12, added a birdie on #6, and made 12 pars during her round. De Guzman finishes her Spartan career with 113 rounds played and a 73.84 stroke average.

"Regan was one of the most talented San José State golfers in the last 15 years. Injuries affected her game and progress on the course. However, she gave us everything she could for four years. We are thrilled that she will be graduating with her degree later this month," said Spartan head coach John Dormann.

Cooper and Elizabeth Schultz each shot one-over 72 in the final round. Cooper made one eagle (her hole-in-one on #4), one birdie and 12 pars. She tied for 52nd at 226.

Schultz finished the tournament tied for 50th at 225. She started the round by making three birdies over her first nine holes and was two-under at the turn. She made her fourth birdie on #2, to go to three-under for the day, before a double-bogey left her at one-under. Schultz finished the round with four pars and two bogeys.

"We had a good round today and a good team effort," said Dormann. "We started the day well, especially making four birdies and an eagle on the par-5 #12. The freshmen now understand what it takes to succeed at this level. We had our chances on holes 7-8-9 but just couldn't quite get there.

"This team fought hard for all 54 holes of the regional. They never gave up, and that is all we can ask for from them."

The Spartans were top finisher of the three Mountain West teams at the Stanford Regional. San Diego State was 12th at 895, while UNLV finished 14th at 908. Conference foe New Mexico played at the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional where the team placed 16th at 927.

San José State finished the 2015-16 with a team title at the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate and set team records for the lowest round by score (275, twice) and lowest team score by tournament (843, Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown). Leander set the school record for lowest individual round score at 65 and in relation to par at seven under (both at Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown). Two Spartans received All-MW honors - Leander, first team; De Guzman, second team.

"We started the year with five freshmen in our program," said Dormann. "There were a lot of growing pains and ups-and-downs throughout the year. At the end of this season, they came together and finished very strongly at this regional. They are excited about playing this summer, improving their games and coming back to play next fall."
