Swimmers Brenna Bushey & Colleen Humel Post Olympic Trials Qualifying Times

June 12, 2016

Roseville, Calif.----- San Jose State University swimmers Brenna Bushey and Colleen Humel are headed to the 2016 United States Olympics Team Trials meet at the end of June in Omaha, Nebraska.

Bushey, a junior-to-be from Littleton, Colo., matched the qualifying time of 1:01.19 in the 100-meter butterfly and Humel, a junior-to-be from Chicopee, Mass., bettered the 100-meter backstroke standard of 1:03.19 with a 1:02.85 time. Both swims occurred at a time trial on the final day of the Summer Sanders Invitational at the Roseville (Calif.) Aquatic Complex.

"I'm excited I did with Brenna. We have a lot in common," said Humel, who also attempted to qualify for the U.S. Olympic trials in the 200 backstroke. "It's been a goal of mine for a long time, something I wanted to shoot for."

""It's always been a dream of mine. I watched the Trials in 2008 with my dad. After that, I wanted to have one of my own," said Bushey, who also swam in the 50 freestyle at the meet. "I'm glad I made it in the 100 fly. It's my best event."

"…We ticketed this meet for getting the (qualifying) cuts. I'm most proud of them maintaining their composure and getting it on their last swims was great to see," said San Jose State women's swimming and diving head coach Sage Hopkins, who noted both Spartans were assigned lane #3 in back-to-back successful swims.

The U.S. Olympic Team trials meet is June 26 through July 3 at the CenturyLink Center.

Humel and Bushey become the second and third Spartans to qualify for the Olympic Trials. Last summer, Riley Spitser qualified for the meet in the 400 meter freestyle.
