Jose Pina Competing At USATF Junior Championships

- San José State men's distance runner Jose Piña is in Clovis, Calif. this weekend competing in the United State of America Track and Field Junior Championships.

Piña will compete in the 5,000-meter run on Saturday, June 25th at the Veteran's Memorial Stadium. The field will be comprised of 14 runners from various universities across the country who qualified for the championships running below the qualifying standard time of 14:40.00 while being 19 years old and younger.

Piña, who just completed his freshman year at San José State, met the qualifying standard time during the Spartans' spring season when he ran a 14:38.16 at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival on April 1.

The San Jose, Calif., native lowered his personal record time to 14:31.71 at the West Coast Last Chance Open on May 14 in San Francisco.

This is the second year in a row the Spartans are represented at the USATF Junior Championships. At last year's USATF Junior Championships, held in Eugene, Ore., Craig Huff competed in the men's 3000-meter steeplechase and Makayla Webb in the 400-meter hurdles.
