Norfolk, Va.----- San Jose State University sophomores Cari Reiswig and Colleen Humel and redshirt freshman Brenna Bushey were named to the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Scholar All-America team as honorable mention award winners.
The three Spartans met the criteria of achieving a 3.50 grade-point average and achieved a "B" time standard in a swimming event or competed in a zone championship meet in diving.
For Reiswig and Humel, it is the second year in a row each Spartan earned the honor from the CSCAA. Bushey's recognition is her first. This year's announcement marks the first time in school history three members of the San Jose State University program were honored in one academic year.
"My number-one priority as the head coach is creating and sustaining a culture which emphasizes academic success along with competitive success. Cari, Brenna and Colleen embody the ideal of the 'student-athlete' â€" combining tremendous grades along with national level athletics accomplishments," says Sage Hopkins, San José State University's women's swimming and diving head coach. "Three honorees is the most our program has had in a single year and is a tremendous accomplishment for us."
Reiswig, a diver from Galt, Calif., became the first Spartan diver in three years to reach a final event at the NCAA Zone Diving Championships. She finished 14th in the 3-meter and 16th in the 1-meter diving events at the 2016 NCAA Zone E Diving Championships in Flagstaff, Ariz.
Humel, a backstroke specialist from Chicopee, Mass., and Bushey, from Littleton, Colo., whose best stroke is the butterfly, are competing at the USA Swimming Team Olympic Trials in Omaha, Neb., June 26-July 3, with Spartan teammate Riley Spitser.
Bushey swam a 1:02.42 in the 100 meter butterfly to finish 123rd in a June 26 qualifying heat. The top 16 advanced to the semifinal round. Humel competes in the 100 backstroke and Spitser in the 400 freestyle on June 27.
