Palomar League champion hurdler Jayla Williams has signed a National Letter-of-Intent to compete for the San José State women's track & field team beginning in the fall of 2016. Sprints coach Kelley Watson made the announcement.
"We are excited to see Jayla develop in our program," Watson said. "She will be a great addition as she learns more of the technical components of hurdling. Jayla will add depth to an already growing hurdler and relay group."
The graduate of Torrey Pines High School in Encinitas, Calif., joins the Spartans after winning three events at the Palomar League Finals.
She was the league champion in the 100-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 15.07. That wouldn't be all as she claimed victory in the 300-meter championship event with a 45.53. Her third victory at the league finals came when she led off the 4x100-meter relay team that took first place.
Williams showed her versatility the following week when she anchored the 4x100 team when it clocked a season-best 48.22 to win the CIF San Diego Section Prelims and qualify for the state championship.
At the same meet, Williams also clocked a new lifetime-best 45.11 in the 300-hurdles.
Williams joins Jacqueline Escalera, Jennifer Sandoval, Destiny Longmire, Diamond Tabron and Camilla Hanson in the group of SJSU women's track & field NLI signees for the 2016-17 season.
