San Jose, Calif. â€" For his accomplishments on the field and in the community, San José State's Tim Crawley received multiple honors on Wednesday, being named to the 2016 Wuerffel Trophy Watch List and nomination to the Allstate American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Good Works Team®.
Crawley, a versatile senior, plays wide receiver as well as running back in San José State's offensive scheme and can returns punts and kickoffs. In 2015, he enjoyed his most productive season at a Spartan. Crawley ranked third on the team and set personal single-season highs with 39 receptions and six touchdowns. At Nevada he scored three times, first on a fumble recovery in the end zone and then on a pair of 13-yard touchdown receptions.
Among the volunteer work, the Santa Clara native participates in the annual campus fall semester move-ins. Works with San José State's communicative disorders and sciences department in connection with youngsters diagnosed with autism and was one of the team's volunteers assigned to visit the Florida Hospital when the Spartans played and won the 2015 AutoNation Cure Bowl.
Crawley graduated magna cum laude following the 2016 spring semester with a degree in business management information systems and is enrolled in San José State University's master's degree program in interdisciplinary studies. He was selected a 2015 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District VII honoree and was one of 15 national semifinalists for the 2016 Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholar Award given by Diverse Issues in Higher Education. A three-time San José State University Dean's List honoree, Mountain West Scholar-Athlete and Mountain West All-Academic team selection, Crawley is one of 177 Spartan student-athletes honored by the National Consortium for Athletics and Sports on 2015 National Student-Athlete Day.
Wuerffel Trophy Watch List
The Wuerffel Trophy announced 88 players for its preseason watch list from college football's Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS).
The All Sports Association presents the Wuerffel Trophy, known as "College Football's Premier Award for Community Service," annually. Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Danny Wuerffel from the University of Florida, the Wuerffel Trophy is awarded to the FBS player that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.
Voting for the Wuerffel Trophy is performed by a National Selection Committee, which includes college football television and print media, industry notables, former head coaches and prior Wuerffel Trophy recipients. Semifinalists for the award will be announced on November 3 and finalists on November 23.
The formal announcement of the 2016 recipient will be on December 6 at the National Football Foundation's press conference in New York City, with the presentation of the 2016 Wuerffel Trophy occurring at the 48th Annual All Sports Association Awards Banquet on February 10, 2017 in Fort Walton Beach, Florida.
Crawley is one of five student-athletes representing Mountain West Conference schools who have been named to the Wuerffel Trophy Watch List.
Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®
Allstate Insurance Company and the AFCA announced 165 nominees for the 2016 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®, marking the 25th anniversary of the award, which was established in 1992 to recognize a select group of college football players who have made a commitment to service and enriching the lives of others.
The players selected have carried on the award's mission by demonstrating that 'good works' extend beyond the football field. Nominees uphold impressive service resumes detailing inspiring stories of servitude and the exceptional ability to balance academics with athletics, while donating their limited free time and energy to helping others.
Allstate and the AFCA will announce a final roster of 25 members in September. For the first time in the award's history, the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® will be comprised of 12 players from the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision, 12 players from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, Divisions II, III and the NAIA and an honorary head coach.
