Volleyball Off To 3-0 Start After Sweeping UMass Lowell & Manhattan

San José, Calif.--The San José State volleyball team swept UMass Lowell 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-23) and Manhattan, 3-0 (31-29, 25-15, 25-20) Saturday at the Spartan Invitational to finish with the best overall record at the tournament at 3-0.

The Spartans begin a season 3-0 for the first time since 2006 when the team won the Hilton Garden Inn/NAU Invitational with wins over Fordham, Central Arkansas and Northern Arizona.

With the title, San José State's Thelma Grétarsdottir was named the Spartan Invitational's Most Valuable Player. She averaged 3.44 kills and 1.89 digs per set on the weekend. Also making the all-tournament team from SJSU were Summer Avery and Luiza Andrade.

Against UMass Lowell on Saturday, San José State hit .333 in the win with 46 kills on 102 attempts and just 12 hitting errors. Grétarsdottir led all hitters with 14 kills and hit .370 for the match (14-4-27). Avery added 10 kills as she hit .409 (10-1-22).

Andrade led the Spartans with 15 digs, while Nandyala Gama had a team-best four blocks. San José State outblocked the River Hawks 8-2.

In the final match of the day, the Spartans and Jaspers played a lively first set. SJSU led 21-14 before Manhattan used an 8-1 run to tie the set at 22-22. The two teams then battled back and forth until a Spartan block by Thaliana Grajeda and Grétarsdottir gave the team a 31-29 win.

The Spartans then won the next two sets, 25-15 and 25-20. Grétarsdottir and Avery each had 10 kills in the match to lead the team. Grétarsdottir recorded the first Spartan double-double of the season with her 10 kills and 10 digs. Andrade led the team with 12 kills, and Thaliana Grajeda recorded a team-best nine block assists.

San José State takes its undefeated record on the road next weekend to the state of Utah. The Spartans play at the Wolverine Invitational hosted by Utah Valley in Orem. SJSU plays Southern Utah on Friday and North Texas and Utah Valley on Saturday.
