#18-San Jose State Men's Water Polo Loses 13-7 At #13-UC Davis

Sept. 10, 2016

Box Score

Davis, Calif.----- #13-ranked UC Davis scored three of its first four goals on power plays and went on to defeat #18-San Jose State University, 13-7, in a non-conference men's water polo match.

The Aggies (4-1) finished 5-of-8 on their power play. The Spartans (1-1) also had eight power plays, but converted just two. Akos Balazs scored San Jose State's first goal on a power play that cut the deficit to 4-1 with 1:22 left in the first quarter.

"We had a slow start. UC Davis pretty much did a good job with their 6-on-5's and we couldn't catch up," said San Jose State head coach Bruce Watson. "This was a step up from Santa Clara and our guys didn't play well until the second half."

The Spartans trailed by three goals three times in the first half and trailed, 8-3, at halftime.

"It was 11-7 (in the fourth quarter) and we had two opportunities to score, but didn't. They're definitely a better team than Santa Clara," added the Spartans' head coach who pointed out there was a 10-goal differential in last year's loss to the Aggies.

"We're so new to each other. We have a few returning guys and 13 freshmen. It's a growing process and we have a lot to learn.

"(For many of them), it is their first introduction to Division I and how physical and tough it is. We did get better with every quarter (today)."

Seven Spartans each scored once. UC Davis edged San Jose State is the shot category, 29-28.

"I love to have as many players score as possible. That's a positive," Watson concluded.

San Jose State returns to UC Davis next weekend playing four matches in the Aggie Roundup. Cal Baptist, Fresno Pacific, Redlands and host UC Davis will be the opponents.
