STANFORD, Calif. - On a cool evening at Cagan Stadium on the Stanford campus, the San José State men's team lost, 4-1, against the defending NCAA champion, Stanford Cardinal.
After going down 1-0 on a 32nd minute goal by Stanford's Corey Baird, the Spartans answered back with a shot by junior forward, Jeremy Romero, in the 52nd minute.
Romero ripped his shot from 20 yards out from the left side of the box into the top right corner of the goal on a beautifully struck ball. It was the CSU East Bay transfer's first goal as a Spartan. Jonathan Colunga was awarded with an assist, his second of the season.
With the game tied at one apiece, the turning point of the game came in the 67th minute, when the Spartans gave up a soft goal on a free kick from 25 yards by Cardinal defenseman Adam Mosharrafa. Spartan goalkeeper Nedin Tucokovic seemingly had a beat on it but the ball slipped under his arms to give the Cardinal a 2-1 lead.
Less than a minute later, in the 68th minute, the Cardinal struck again. Mosharrafa delivered a free kick from 35 yards out to the back post to teammate Tomas Hilliard-Arce, who headed it to Foster Langsdorm for a header to put Stanford up 3-1.
Stanford scored another goal in the 84th minute for the final margin of the game, 4-1.
The Spartans were outshot in the game, 23-6, as they have been outshot in each of their five games, four of which have been played on the road. For the season, San José have been outshot 101-47.
The Spartans dropped their record to 1-3-1, losing their third consecutive game, all on the road. Stanford improved its record to 1-1-3.
San José State play next at Sacramento State on Sunday, September 18 at 12:00 p.m. PT.
