Final Leaderboards

Spokane, Wash.----- Junior Scott Munger's two-under par 69 in the final round was the highlight of the San Jose State University men's golf team's trip to the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate at the Palouse Ridge Golf Course.

Munger's round on the par 71, 7,308-yard course consisted of six birdies and two bogeys. After playing 13 holes, he was five-under par for the round with his fourth birdie in a five-hole stretch on the front nine. "Scott's been playing well. When he hits his lines and makes his putts, he can do very well," said San Jose State men's golf coach John Kennaday about the junior from Danville, Calif., who tied for 26th place in the 83-man field with a five-over par 218. Munger played even-par golf for the final 36 holes for his best finish since placing third at the 2014 Wolverine Intercollegiate in Ann Arbor, Mich. "He played a pretty good tournament."

Munger was the only Spartan to post an under-par round during the 54-hole tournament. Even with its best team score of the tournament, a 295 in the final round, San Jose State finished 14th in the 14-team field with a 904 team score.

"We came into this tournament thinking we could win it, but we didn't. It's up to us to play and make good things happen. We can't compound our mistakes and win.

"Our guys are coming to terms with it. They played better (today). Yesterday put a burr in their saddle. We came out today with more intent."

Henrik Sohlberg at 224 in a tie for 50th place; Sean Talmadge in his first major college tournament at 230 in a tie for 66th; Matt Murray, who tied for 71st at 233; and Brett Thawley, 81st at 238, rounded out San Jose State's team for the season opener.

Host Washington State won the team title with a 10-under par 842. Utah was a distant second at 861. Sacramento State rounded out the top three teams at 862.

Washington State's Nick Mandell, who played as an individual entry, held off teammate Derek Bayley and Idaho individual player Ethan Atherstone to win by one stroke. Mandell had a final round 73 for a three-under par 210. Only five golfers bettered par.

San Jose State returns to action, Friday, September 30 in the three-day, 54-hole GolfWeek Conference Challenge in Burlington, Iowa.
