Sept. 13, 2016
Fort Collins, Colo.--The San José State women's golf team opened the 2016-17 season by sweeping the team and individual titles at the Colonel Wollenberg Ptarmigan Ram Classic at Ptarmigan Country Club in Fort Collins, Colo.
Despite cold and sometimes rainy conditions, the Spartans shot a 299 in the final round to finish at seven-over 871 for the three rounds, 14 shots ahead of second-place UC Irvine. San José State won the tournament for the first time in 12 appearances.
Individually, My Leander shot an even-par 72 and finished with a six-under 210, to win her first collegiate tournament. She made 13 birdies and 32 pars during the three rounds.
Leander started the day making bogeys on holes #1 and #3 before a string of birdies on #5-7 left her at one-under par at the turn. After going bogey-par-par-bogey, she made birdies on #14 and #15 before ending the round par-bogey-par.
Franziska Friedrich finished sixth in her first collegiate tournament after shooting a 76 in the last round. She ended her three rounds at even-par 216, and made 11 birdies during the tournament. Alexandra Cooper and Abegail Arevalo tied for 24th at 226. Cooper shot a 74 in her final round, while Arevalo shot a 77. Elizabeth Schultz tied for 29th at 227, as she recorded a 78 in her final round.
"I am very pleased with the way we played at the tournament," said Spartan head coach John Dormann. "We played okay considering the conditions but had too many big numbers today. All five players made contributions to the tournament win, and that is a good sign for the future. We can enjoy this win for a day and then get ready to host our tournament next week.
"I am really happy for My and her first win. She has been showing signs of winning, and it was nice to see that happen. On her birdie holes during the last round, her irons got hot, and she was able to hit the ball close to give her those opportunities."
The Spartans now come home to host the Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational next Monday and Tuesday, September 19 and 20, at the Almaden Golf and Country Club in South San Jose. The teams will begin each day with a shotgun start at 9 a.m., playing 36 holes on Monday and 18 holes on Tuesday. Admission to the tournament is free.
