Box Score

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The San José State men's soccer team nearly overcame a two goal deficit but freshman Suliman Khorami's match equalizing shot hit the post in the 61st minute, as the Spartans fell 3-2 against Sacramento State.

The Spartans fell behind by two goals on two occasions, each time answering back with a goal to cut the lead to one. With the Spartans down, 3-2, Khorami had an opportunity to tie the score up but his left foot shot clanged off the post in the 61st minute.

Similar to last year's match against Sacramento State, the Spartans fell behind 2-0 in the first half when the Hornets scored in the 18th and 33rd minute.

San José State answered back just before the half, when Jeremy Romero headed a corner kick from Khorami to cut Sacramento State's lead by half, 2-1. It was Romero's second goal in as many games, putting him atop the team lead with two. It was Khorami's second assist of the season putting him atop the team in that category.

The Spartans were outshot 13-6 in the first half but thanks to Romero's goal, it had the momentum on its side going into halftime.

However, the momentum was short lived when Sacramento State scored their third goal of the game, four minutes into the second half to put the Hornets up, 3-1.

Down two goals for the second time in the match, San José State was awarded a penalty kick in the 54th minute when Leo Silva was fouled inside the 18. Silva, a West Valley College transfer, made the penalty kick for his first goal as a Spartan to make it a one goal game once again.

The closest Spartans got after Silva's goal was the post shot by Khorami.

San José State dropped their fourth consecutive match, all on the road, and sits at a 1-4-1 record for the season. Sacramento State improved its record to 3-3-0.

The Spartans return home next week for two matches. The first match will be played under the lights (7:00 p.m. PT) at CEFCU Stadium on Friday, September 23 against UC Riverside.
