Davis, Calif.----- San Jose State University concluded its first men's water tournament of the season losing a pair of matches on the final day of the Aggie Roundup at the Schaal Aquatics Center on the UC Davis campus.
The #17-ranked Spartans (2-4) were edged by unranked Redlands, 11-10, and lost to #12-ranked UC Davis, 9-5. San Jose State finished 1-3 in the tournament. The Spartans' win was a 12-10 overtime victory against #16-ranked Cal Baptist.
"This was a good learning experience for us. We're really young. You can't go from high school or Junior Olympics to Division I right away," said San Jose State head coach Bruce Watson about the team's first tournament of the season.
"They're growing and getting better. We beat a good Cal Baptist team. And, we had a let down against Fresno Pacific. We didn't shoot well (against Fresno Pacific). We're not a good shooting team right now."
San Jose State appeared on its way early for its third win of the season against Redlands. The Spartans scored the first four goals of the match and led 5-1 with 0:40 left in the first quarter.
Redlands' power play got the Bulldogs back in the match. Four second-quarter power play goals helped even the score at 6-6 at halftime. Redlands would finish the match 8-for-10 on power plays.
The Spartans had their best power play performance in a match this season converting 4-of-8, but were unable to capitalize on three man advantages in the second half.
UC Davis' win over the Spartans in the nightcap was the Aggies' second over San Jose State in eight days. The first was a 13-7 decision on September 10. The nine goals allowed by the Spartans are the fewest scored by an opponent in a match this season.
Though Cade Baldridge and Jackson Kennedy converted two 5-meter penalty shots for the Spartans, the lack of power play scoring was one of the team's downfalls. San Jose State was 1-for-12.
"We had a pretty good game vs. Davis. It should have been closer. We played much better defense. We played even with them, but we didn't convert our power plays," added the Spartans' head coach.
Unlike the opener against Redlands, the Spartans did defend the power play better against UC Davis. The Aggies were just 3-of-15 and built a 6-3 halftime lead with their three power play goals.
San Jose State is back in the pool, Friday, September 23, in the Mountain Pacific Invitational hosted by the University of California. The Spartans' first opponent is Stanford at the Northgate High School pool in Walnut Creek. Match time is 5:15 p.m.
